Future-Ready ELT for Global Challenges
In today’s rapidly changing and interconnected world, the field of English language teaching (ELT) faces both new opportunities and complex challenges, calling for a shift toward a more future-ready approach. Such an approach involves fostering intercultural understanding, global citizenship, and multiple literacies—including digital, media, and multilingual competencies. To achieve these aims, learners are encouraged to engage in diverse cultural and experiential contexts that cross geographical, cultural, and institutional boundaries, supported by digital
learning tools and interdisciplinary collaboration. Recognizing this need for innovation and adaptability, the 43rd International
Conference on English Teaching and Learning (ETRA 2026) adopts “Future-ready ELT for Global Challenges” as its central theme. The conference explores how English teaching and learning can evolve through technological, pedagogical, and creative innovation while remaining grounded in meaningful, learner-centered engagement. At its core, future-ready ELT emphasizes the importance of preparing teachers and learners to face the future with confidence by integrating emerging technologies such as AI, nurturing 21st-century skills that include critical thinking, creative problem-solving, intercultural communication, and digital literacy, and by using English as a platform for meaningful engagement with global challenges, including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Guided by the vision of future-ready ELT, the conference invites abstracts that explore innovative practices, research, and perspectives that help educators, learners, and institutions thrive in a changing world. Submissions focusing on technology, identity, and sustainable development—as well as other topics that contribute to advancing future-ready ELT—are warmly welcomed. These may include, but are not
limited to, the key subthemes below.

 Multiliteracies and translanguaging in ELT
