Keynote Speaker: Professor Eric Friginal

Professor and Head of the Department of English and Communication and Director of the Research Centre for Professional Communication in English (RCPCE) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong SAR

I’ll draw connections on how corpus linguistics and emerging technologies, especially generative AI, are reshaping language teaching and learning in professional and industry-specific domains (e.g., aviation, business communication, healthcare). I’ll describe how authentic language data, corpus-informed pedagogy, and AI-supported tools can help teachers design more relevant, evidence-based, and workplace-oriented learning experiences. The talk will focus on what current and future teachers need to understand about using corpora and AI critically, ethically, and pedagogically. It will address opportunities, limitations, and practical classroom applications, while highlighting the evolving role of teachers as mediators of language, technology, and professional communication.

Keynote Speaker: Professor Shinichi Izumi

Professor, Department of English Studies, Faculty of Foreign Studies, Sophia University, Japan

Decades of research in second language acquisition (SLA) have greatly expanded our understanding of how additional languages are learned. Yet an important question remains: What does this knowledge actually mean for everyday classroom teaching? This talk explores how key insights from SLA research can inform practical decisions about teaching and help create classroom environments in which language acquisition can flourish.

I will first present a broad picture of the SLA process, highlighting the importance of rich and meaningful input, attention and noticing, interaction, and opportunities for purposeful output. I will then illustrate how these principles can be translated into practice through concrete classroom examples. Particular attention will be given to how teachers can provide and make effective use of meaningful input, promote interaction and active learner involvement, draw learners’ attention to language in context, and create opportunities for meaningful language use.

Rather than prescribing a particular teaching method, the talk aims to show how insights from SLA can provide a principled basis for making pedagogical choices in different classroom contexts. Such principles can help teachers look beyond particular methods or techniques and make informed decisions about how best to support learning in their own classrooms. They also provide a basis for adapting teaching to different learners, goals, and educational contexts. Ultimately, I argue that good classroom practice is where SLA principles come to life.

Colloquium Speaker & Chair: Professor Siaw-Fong Chung

Professor, Department of English, National Chengchi University

This colloquium will be chaired by Professor Siaw-Fong Chung. It brings together discussions of EMI, bilingual education, and creative pedagogy in the context of higher education internationalization in Taiwan. As universities devote increasing attention to EMI and bilingual education, there is a need to consider not only institutional strategies and language policies but also what actually happens in the classroom.

Particular attention will be given to how teachers can create effective learning environments for students from diverse backgrounds and with different levels of language proficiency. The colloquium will also highlight the importance of creative pedagogy, flexible teaching practices, and the sharing of classroom experiences and lesson designs.

Through dialogue among teachers and researchers, the colloquium aims to provide a platform for exchanging ideas and rethinking how EMI and bilingual education can be implemented in ways that are pedagogically meaningful, responsive to learners, and supportive of the broader internationalization of higher education in Taiwan.

為時60分鐘，以教學示範或是教材運用為主，並提供與會者主動參與的機會。每場工作坊的摘要需包括工作坊之展示目的及工作內容。

Workshops give opportunities for demonstrations of teaching or the use of materials in a 60-minute timeframe. The audience is expected to be actively involved. The abstract should include the purpose of the demonstration and the tasks to be performed.

每場論壇由3到4位學者參加，針對特定主題進行60分鐘的討論。論壇召集人請提交摘要描述論壇主題，包含每位與會者之論點聲明。

A panel is formed by 3 or 4 scholars centering their discussion on a particular topic within 60 minutes. The panel organizer should submit an abstract delineating the theme of the panel, including each panelist’s statement explaining his/her standpoints.
